Magical Athlete - The Most Chaotically Brilliant Racing Game You Didn't Know You Needed
If you've ever thought to yourself, "Racing games are fun, but what if we made them absolutely ridiculous?" - then congratulations, you and Magical Athlete are destined soulmates.
At its core, the game uses the simplest possible racing rules:
Roll a die. Move that many spaces. Try to win.
That's it. That's the entire rulebook…
…until the racers show up.
Because every single racer in Magical Athlete immediately throws those rules out of the window, sets them on fire, and sprints (or waddles or flops) off in their own special way.
Drafting Your Team of Misfits
Before the mayhem begins, each player drafts a team of four racers. You'll run four races total, and in each one, you choose which member of your dysfunctional squad will represent you.
But choose wisely:
Later races award more points.
So maybe don't waste your heavy hitters early unless you enjoy regret.
On your turn, the flow is simple: roll the die, move your racer, and pray your path doesn't cross someone who's about to use an ability that sends you back to the Stone Age.
Ending a Race (Before Someone Flips the Table)
A race ends as soon as two racers cross the finish line and scoop up their scoring tokens. Everyone else? Better luck next time.
All the used racers go off for a nice lie-down, the cards get cleared away, and the board flips to reveal… the wild side.
Welcome to the Wild Wilds
The wild side of the board introduces special spaces that basically exist to laugh at your strategy:
Arrows:
Land on one of these and you're instantly shunted forward or backward the indicated number of spaces. Sometimes it helps. Sometimes it ruins your hopes and dreams
Trip Spaces:
End your turn here and your racer faceplants dramatically. On your next turn, you skip your main action entirely just to stand back up. Graceful.
And don't forget, whoever finished furthest from the finish line in the previous race becomes the starting player next time.
Finally, a reward for being terrible.
Victory! (Or Not.)
After four rounds of running, swapping, attaching, tripping, sliding, teleporting, or whatever else your party of magical weirdos has done, players tally up their points.
Whoever has the most wins!
If you're after a racing game that takes five minutes to learn, one minute to lose all sense of dignity, and zero minutes to start laughing, Magical Athlete is an absolute gem.
It's chaotic, it's silly, and it's brilliant - exactly the type of tabletop nonsense we all need more of.
