03.11.2026 INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR BIOSPHERE RESERVES

International Day for Biosphere Reserves is celebrated annually on November 3, an awareness day first proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference in 2021.
The day highlights the importance of protecting nature while supporting the communities that depend on it.
This is why it recognises the contribution of biosphere reserves to biodiversity conservation, sustainable development and the harmonious relationship between people and nature.

Some numbers:

  • There are currently 797 UNESCO Biospheres in 145 countries, including 25 transboundary biosphere reserves, connecting people, ecosystems and knowledge across the globe.
  • More than 260 million people live in UNESCO Biospheres worldwide.
  • The Biosphere designation protects more than 7 million km² of land and sea.

With each passing year, the urgency of tackling environmental issues becomes clearer: we only have one planet, and it is in danger. Our relationship with nature and with other living beings needs a radical rethink in order to address these issues - we need to design and create a truly shared world.

Biosphere reserves have shown that it is possible to live in this world while also establishing a sustainable and harmonious relationship with nature.

The International Day for Biosphere Reserves is an invitation to take inspiration from the solutions already implemented in these spaces to build genuinely sustainable development everywhere, with full respect for nature and for the living world.

This is why we've decided to celebrate this day suggesting some thematically relevant games!
All the titles you will find in the list are not just "nature" related games, but their themes are specifically about conservation, protection, or re-wilding.

With insights from real-world foresters, Forestry Board Game offers an engaging and educational look into their work.
Forestry Board Game combines familiar mechanics with a fresh twist, using two worker types: harvester and manager. Players strategically assign tasks with action points to balance forest health and sustainable wood production.
This medium-weight Euro game provides opportunities to interact with the world of the sustainable forestry in an engaging manner.
The central mechanic of the game involves a "dual worker system" where players manage a harvester (moving on the forest map) and a sawmill manager (handles contracts and wood processing).

Experience a deep new ever-changing adventure in this followup to the smash hit Endeavor: Age of Sail! This edition is set in a new era of nautical discovery, but uses streamlined rules which will be familiar to fans of the original game.

Reef Project

Despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor, coral reefs are estimated to be home to about 25% of all marine species. Unfortunately, these vibrant underwater cities are dying. Climate change and its effect of rising sea temperatures is devastating the colorful algae that give coral reefs their brilliant hues, resulting in coral bleaching. Furthermore, other threats like pollution - in its various insidious forms - and overfishing are disrupting the delicate balance of reef ecosystems.
And so, scientists from various fields, along with the researchers studying the ecological complexity and significance of the reefs, are collaborating to address the myriad challenges facing these ecosystems. Your assignment is to take command of a scientific vessel and embark on a journey of reef conservation. Hire the best crew, clean the ocean, and restore the reefs to their former glory.
During the game, players take on the role of researchers and saviors of the oceans. You will sail the seas, hire crew, explore the coral reef, clean the ocean sectors of any pollution, and try to accomplish as many missions as possible.
On their turn players may choose to RECHARGE or TRAVEL. If they RECHARGE, they gain the rewards from the VP track. If they TRAVEL, they may deploy Reef Balls, move their Ship, play Mission cards, and perform various actions. The game is played for a variable number of rounds. When a player has crossed the 45 VP threshold, the end of the game is triggered. After an additional round the final scoring takes place and the player with the most victory points is the winner.
